Beyond the #indictment, changes in our laws are needed.
Here’s our take on the August 2023 #indictment of former President Trump, effectively stemming from the January 6, 2021 attack at the U.S. Capitol, from an #EmergencyManagement perspective.
Many different disasters occurred on that day, several of which were life threatening and unfortunately deadly. Emergency Management does not focus on culpability or blame (that is what investigations and indictments produce — both not roles for Emergency Managers) but does look at causality. And what is key for Emergency Management is something we call “unity of effort” — everyone has the same priorities enforced through Command and Control in their missions: and life safety of the workforce and the public always comes first.
There were bomb threats in the D.C. Metro area, the breech of the U.S. Capitol, threats to the Vice President in the performance of his constitutional role in the election count process, a delay in the election count process, misinformation/disinformation campaigns, and more. And there was a worldwide pandemic still occurring. Emergency Managers do not focus on who or what caused the pandemic, they focus on who or what is adversely impacted by the pandemic. So, on January 6th, there were natural/human-made, product/process, and fictitious disasters — all occurring concurrently. Whether they were all interconnected…
